Learning to Read with Learning Disabilities

I have a child with "Learning Disabilities". I was told he would never read.
Boy were they wrong!

Many of you are home school teachers and I'm sure you face the same challenges.

I used a simple trick to teach my son to read. Comics!

My parents frowned on Madd Magazine as too racy for a child....so I
subscribed and saw that he was determined to read that "racy" magazine.

Marvel and DC Comics did the rest. He couldn't put them down!
To this day, he is an avid collector (and reader).

Comic books opened the door for him and now he can read anything.

If you are frustrated by your child's reading progress, remember to use
"The Power of Comics".

Easy Kids Wash Tub Garden - teach Your Children to Go Green

( I used this for Wordless Wed - but this Chatty Kathy always has something to say! lol)

This project is fun and educational.

You will need
wash tub
bag of potting soil
time release fertilizer (Walmart osmocote free after $10 rebate)
rocks, gravel
hammer and nail
paint

Trip to the grocery store to get seeds!
That's right there are plenty of seeds you can
use. If you are on Food Stamps, this is a way
to get all the seeds you need for a bigger garden.

Set it up:
If your wash tub doesn't have a "rotten" bottom (holes in it)
turn it upside down and poke holes in the bottom with a hammer
and nails.

Let the kids paint the tub if so desired.

After it dries in the sun,
fill the bottom with a one inch layer of small
rocks, shells or gravel.

Dump in one bag of potting soil.

Sprinkle in 2 cups of time release fertilizer
and stir around with a wooden spoon
working the fertilizer into the top few inches of soil.

Now the real lesson begins!

Take the kids to the grocery store to gather seeds and plants for
the garden.

Easy choices:
spring onions with roots and tops on
dried elephant garlic bulb
(any dried garlic bulb)
Watermelon (not seedless)
honey dew
cantaloupe
any winter squash
pumpkins
dried beans
cherry tomatoes
any fresh tomatoes
fresh bell peppers
potatoes

Have a watermelon party, eat the melons,
plant some of the seeds in the washtub garden
Add a mixture of seeds so the kids can grow
more than one type plant.

Keep the soil moist but not soggy
til they sprout.

After the plants sprout, spread a thick layer of
any organic mulch (leaves, bark, gravel)
over the top of the tub garden, around the plants.
This will help you conserve water.

tip: don't stake tomatoes,
let them trail over the side.

this easy project?

They learn where food comes from.
They learn how to provide food for
their family.
Children naturally love gardening and will
eat what they grow with no fuss.
You are connecting them with the Green Life.
They learn that they can grow food anywhere,
a porch, patio or rooftop!
They learn to re-purpose - these
containers can be used for years!

If you don't have an old wash tub,
choose any old large container to re -purpose!

Take photos of your kids creating their garden
and share them on your blogs, spreading the knowledge
and inspiring others to Go Green!
Now you are teaching them to make a difference.

Whats My Worth?
I am in a ning group (that i really love) called The Pitch List. In a recent post, Jennifer from Gaffney's Gabs asked about price per post and what you are worth. It's a tough subject because of the angles you could go off. Maybe you have tons of twitter followers but no real readership. Maybe you have great traffic but no social media following, etc. Jennifer found an article, and I am going to paste it as written:

The best metric to base your decision off in my opinion is your RSS subscriber numbers. These are typically tracker through a third party like FeedBurner, so sign up if you haven’t already. Here is a table I have drawn up for suggested advertising rates, but keep in mind that you need to have the traffic… not just the subscribers. ;)
1-50 RSS Subscribers $10-$20 per post
50-100 RSS Subscribers $15-$30 per post
100-200 RSS Subscribers $20-$45 per post
200-400 RSS Subscribers $30-$65 per post
400-700 RSS Subscribers $50-$85 per post
700-1000 RSS Subscribers $75-$125 per post
1000-1500 RSS Subscribers $115-$175 per post

I want to share this letter with all of you as it directly affects your kids:

Dear Friend, On Monday, President Obama gave a speech on education reform, addressing challenges that need to be tackled if we're going to out-educate the rest of the world. In a global economy that's more competitive and connected than ever before, we need to invest our time and resources to ensure our Nation's children are ready for the jobs of the future. As you'll see, the President laid out how we can all work together to ensure that every child gets ahead: If you haven’t heard of "No Child Left Behind," reach out to a teacher you know, and ask about it. This major education legislation has inspired heated debate since it passed in 2001, and most experts agree it needs to be improved. The President's speech on Monday details reforms to the legislation that will ensure we not only leave no child behind, but also that we help every student get ahead, including: A flexible and focused accountability system that promotes shared responsibility, college and career readiness, and rewards achievement. Support for reform and innovation at the state and local level that will empower both principals and teachers. New efforts to drive resources and reform to the Nation's persistently low-performing schools and those with the greatest achievement gaps, and to ensure there is a great teacher in every classroom and a great principal in every school. You'll also hear the President talking about the importance of a bottom-up strategy for reform. We need to get the best ideas bubbling up from states, educators, and parents across the country, and then replicate them in places that need help. That's why I asked for Americans' ideas on education reform last week, and the feedback has been terrific. Thousands of responses show broad consensus that the responsibility for our kids' educations begins at home – that parents are taking the time to expand on the lessons learned in the classroom and that teaching fundamental values is irreplaceable. As Wilbur from Nebraska put it: What works for any school is a high level of involvement by both parents and teachers. Technology is great but the level of involvement by parents and teachers make great schools. The plan should be how to get parents move involved in their children's education. As the President said in his speech, over the next 10 years, nearly half of all jobs will require something more than a high school diploma. In the long run, there is no better economic policy than one that invests in our children’s future. Nickolaus from Virginia points out: Students spend too much time sitting and listening to lectures, and they have too little time doing hands-on projects with modern tools and diagnostic systems. America's future depends on hands-on engineers and technologists, and we need to do more to encourage students in these fields. When we finish reviewing all of the comments, we’ll post a follow up on the White House website. In the meantime, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch President Obama's speech.
